僕の親父のような、そしてビッグブラザーのような存在で、「スケッチブック」では 素晴らしいフルートを奏でてくれた彼にもう会えないのかと思うと、寂しさと悲 しさが入り交じり、とても辛いです・・・。
レコーディング、そしてサンタフェの自宅に遊びに行き、音楽談義、 フルートの吹き合い、ドライブと楽しい日々を彼と一緒に過ごしたことは忘れません。 彼からは語り尽くせない大きなものを沢山貰いました・・・。
Herbie ＆ Shinpei のアルバムは実現しなかったけれど、天国から Herbie が 『What's Up, Shinpei？』とちょっとしゃがれた声で 話し掛けてくれてる様でなりません。
Herbie! Keep swingin' in heaven・・・安らかに眠って下さい。

Herbie was like a father or big brother to me. He played an excellent flute performance for my latest album, "Sketchbook II".
It is very tough for me realising that I can't see him any more. I feel a mixture of loneliness and sorrow. At the same time I have the constant reminder of making recordings and visiting his home in Santa Fe where we discussed music, played the flute together, and enjoyed a ride... I'll never forget the happy occasions that I spent with Herbie. I learned so many precious things from him that are beyond words.
Although our plans for Herbie & Shimpei album did not eventuate, I feel like Herbie is talking down from heaven, in a slightly husky voice, "What's Up, Shimpei?"
